The County integrates environmental considerations into purchasing decisions alongside price, performance, and availability. The goal is to reduce pollution, conserve resources, and promote sustainable markets.

Environmentally preferable products may include items that are:

  • Recycled, recyclable, or reusable
  • Energy or water efficient
  • Biodegradable, compostable, or non-toxic
  • Durable, resource-efficient, or made from renewable materials

Policy highlights:

  • Preference of up to 5% price advantage for environmentally preferable products.
  • Consideration of life-cycle costs (maintenance, operation, disposal) as part of “best value” purchasing.
  • Specifications and solicitations will include green purchasing requirements whenever possible.
  • Departments must ensure staff and suppliers are aware of these policies.
