Delta Dental Logo

Dental coverage is an important part of your benefits package and regular dental care is key to your overall health. The County is pleased to offer Delta Dental PPO as your dental plan option.

The Delta Dental PPO plan allows you to visit any licensed dentist or specialist of your choice in both the PPO and Premier Networks nationwide. Participating dentists have agreed to accept pre-negotiated fees for dental procedures, and are prohibited from billing a patient above the predetermined amount (balance billing). This arrangement results in protection and savings for patients. The benefits are the same if you visit an out of network provider but you will pay the difference between what Delta Dental deems is reasonable and customary and the amount the provider charges for the service (balance billing), in addition to any participant copays.

Dentistry has changed in recent years and continues to change on a regular basis. Much of this change is due to new materials, new technology, and new scientific discoveries, as well as changes in the way dentists run their practices. It’s the dentist’s responsibility to inform the patient of the reasonable and appropriate services that are available, regardless of the patient’s dental coverage. It’s the patient’s responsibility to ask the right questions about these options and treatment.

Always request a pre-treatment estimate from your dentist. Provide this predetermination of benefits to Delta Dental before having major dental work done. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Do not agree to any treatment unless you fully understand what condition is being treated, why it is being treated, and the costs of that treatment.

Why Choose an In-Network Dentist?
Employees and Retirees enrolled in Delta Dental PPO

Delta Dental will pay the same amount whether you visit an in network or out of network provider.

In network PPO and Premier providers agree to offer services at lower negotiated rates. The amount you pay will be based on the negotiated rate and not the rate the dentist may charge otherwise. This is typically the most cost savings option for you. You will be responsible only for your copay at the time of service. The PPO and Premier network dentists will manage claims and negotiated reimbursements with Delta Dental.

If you go out of network, you will receive the same benefits but will be responsible for the difference between what the provider charges and what Delta Dental pays. This is called balance billing. You will generally be responsible for the full cost of the visit upfront and will be reimbursed by Delta Dental for the amount they deem reasonable and customary. Some dentists may submit the claims on your behalf, or you may need to submit the claims on your own to Delta Dental, and wait for reimbursement. Learn more about your PPO plan.

It is always recommended that you get a cost estimate or prior authorization prior to having any dental work completed.

Balance Billing Example:
In-Network Cleaning Amount Out of Network Cleaning Amount
Provider Charges $100 Provider Charges $100
Delta Dental Reasonable and Customary Charge $80 Delta Dental Reasonable and Customary Charge $80
In Network Plan Coverage 100% In Network Plan Coverage 100%
Patient Responsibility $0 Patient Responsibility (difference between what Delta Dental pays and the provider charges) $20
