Early in-person voting to expand for November election

Beginning Saturday, registered voters in Sonoma County who have not already voted in the Nov. 8 general election, may vote early in person at one of 31 vote centers located throughout the county. In-person voting has been available since Oct. 29 at seven vote centers, and an additional 24 vote centers will open this weekend.

All 31 vote centers will be open from Nov. 5 to Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Election Day, Nov. 8, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. A complete list of vote centers is provided below. An asterisk designates one of the seven vote centers that has already been open since Oct. 29.

Voters who want to vote in person may go to any vote center in the county; they are not assigned to a single location. This is because Sonoma County officially began conducting elections under the California Voter’s Choice Act election model this year. Named after the state law on which it is based, the objective of this model is to give voters more flexibility regarding how, when, and where to cast their ballots.

In addition to offering early in-person voting, vote centers offer a variety of other services, including serving as drop-off locations for vote-by-mail ballots, issuing replacement vote-by-mail ballots (for example, if a voter’s first ballot never arrived or was lost/spoiled, etc.), providing accessible ballot marking devices to anyone who needs or prefers to use them, and language assistance. Vote centers also allow registered voters the opportunity to update their voter information. Citizens who are eligible to vote but missed the standard voter registration deadline also will have the ability to register and vote conditionally with same-day registration.

Voters may return their vote-by-mail ballot in one of three ways:

• By mail. In order to count, it must be postmarked on or before Election Day, Nov. 8, and received in the Registrar of Voters Office within seven days (Nov. 15).
• Drop it off at an official ballot drop box. There are 21 such boxes in Sonoma County, each of which is open 24/7 until 8 p.m. on Election Day (Nov. 8).
• Bring it to any vote center during the days/hours they are open.

The office is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. In addition, due to the November election, the office will have special extended hours from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, as well as from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day, Nov. 8.
