For Immediate Release
Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport to undergo triennial training exercise
SANTA ROSA, CA | June 12, 2025
On June 17 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Charles M. Schulz – Sonoma County Airport (STS) will be hosting its 2025 Triennial Full-Scale Emergency Exercise to test the Airport Emergency Plan and assess readiness for a major incident. Mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the Triennial is a practical exercise and safety training that takes place every three years at commercial service airports around the United States. The exercise simulates a large-scale aircraft incident, testing the planning, operational readiness, speed and effectiveness of emergency personnel across multiple agencies in real-time.
This year’s exercise brings together more than 150 participants, including emergency responders, volunteers, mutual aid partners and aviation stakeholders.
“This exercise serves to enhance the safety and preparedness of our emergency personnel” said Airport Manager Jon Stout. “A full-scale simulation of a large aircraft incident presents a real challenge, and allows us to test our abilities, refine communication, and put into practice our emergency response capabilities. I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to all our partners in this exercise, including the FAA, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, the Sonoma County Fire District, our airline partners, and all participating agencies.”
The exercise is intended to bolster the airport’s commitment to safety and continuous improvement. Communication, incident command and coordination among multiple agencies are all put to the test to identify opportunities for improvement. The public should be aware that the exercise and training simulations are not an emergency.
The airport will be working closely with the following agencies:
- Sonoma County Fire District
- Sonoma County Sheriff
- FAA air traffic control tower
- FAA Flight Standards district office
- REDCOM
- Fire 139
- Sonoma County Department of Transportation and Public Works
- American Red Cross/Red Cross Disaster Team
- Transportation Security Administration
- Kaiser Air
- Sonoma Jet Center
- Sonoma County Department of Emergency Management
- Aircraft owners/operators
