Cannabis Business Tax Ordinance Update

On May 19, 2026, the Board of Supervisors adopted Ordinance No. 6566 amending the Cannabis Business Tax Ordinance (Chapter 35 of the Sonoma County Code). This ordinance amended the cannabis cultivation and manufacturing tax rates; the retail tax rate remains the same.

New tax rates effective July 1, 2026:
- Cultivation:
  - Outdoor: $0.00 per square foot
  - Mixed-light: $0.00 per square foot
  - Indoor: $0.00 per square foot
- Retail (Non-Storefront or Storefront): 3%
- Manufacturing: 0%

Cannabis Land Use Ordinance and Program Update

On December 9, 2025, the Board of Supervisors adopted Ordinance Nos. 6536 and 6538 amending the Cannabis Land Use Ordinance (Chapter 26 of the Sonoma County Code); Resolution No. 25-0536 certifying the Environmental Impact Report; Resolution No. 25-0537 amending the General Plan and Uniform Rules for Agricultural Preserves and Farmland Security Zones; and Ordinance No. 6537 establishing a cannabis business license (Chapter 4 of the Sonoma County Code). On January 13, 2026, the Board of Supervisors adopted Ordinance No. 6548 amending the Right to Farm Ordinance (Chapter 30 of the Sonoma County Code).

The adopted Cannabis Land Use Ordinance will go into effect on July 1, 2026. Implementation materials will be made available before the effective date of the Ordinance.
